Tips for choosing a rug according to the room

The rug is a key decorative element, in addition to being comfortable and practical. Colors, textures, sizes, quality… there are many models! How to choose the one that will suit each room of your house?

To help you in your decision making, it is best to take into account different factors that will influence your purchases. Here are a few things to think about to guide you.

Dimensions

Rugs come in different sizes. And not for nothing: depending on the size of the room and the furniture, you might gravitate toward one size over another. Sometimes a difference of just a few inches can impact the final look.

  • Will the rug be used to define an area within a room? If so, group the items in that area together (e.g., the desk, chair and standing lamp) and place a rug large enough to hold them all, without spilling over "territory».
  • It can also be very nice to opt for a model that will have exactly the same area as the floor, so it will cover it from wall to wall. In this context, you could use this rug to separate a room in two to give it two distinct vocations.
  • In all cases, the idea is to make sure that the legs or bases of the furniture are inside the rug. Ideally, the rug should even extend 2 or 3 inches beyond the base to achieve a more harmonious look.
  • Don't get one that's too big: you don't want a lip that curls up along the walls or prevents a door from opening smoothly.
  • Do not take a model that is too small in space which will generate an unbalanced look.

Colors and patterns

Is the room where the rug will be located colored or rather neutral? This should be taken into account when making your purchase!

  • For example, a bedroom that is lacking in vibrancy will benefit from a large rug with a striking pattern or vibrant colors. In a playroom or children's room, bright colors are always appropriate.
  • If, on the other hand, your living room is a mix of textures, patterns and colors, a plain rug will be more appropriate. It will soften the eclectic side. A light beige, a light grey or a jute rug will balance the look.
  • It can also be nice to use a tone-on-tone rug, which means that the color is very similar to the flooring. For example, if you have a light oak hardwood floor, a white or cream rug is a good choice.
  • Light colored rugs can get dirty more easily. Therefore, they should be avoided in areas that are more prone to spills such as the entrance, kitchen or children's room.

Textures

The choice of texture is also to be taken into account. This can be a matter of personal taste, but also of the type of room. The rug is certainly an element of decoration and comfort, but it is also an addition that you may regret if you do not evaluate your needs first.

  • In a bedroom, a long-haired or fluffy model is an excellent choice: it will add a warm and enveloping side. It will also be very pleasant under the feet. However, it is less recommended under a dining table in the kitchen: it will be difficult to move the chairs! Or if you have a pet (a long-fiber model will trap dirt and hair, which is not ideal).
  • In a playroom, a rough-textured rug could be unpleasant for little ones, especially if they're crawling around. Otherwise, this model can be used in any room.

Shapes

Most rug designs you will find on the market will be rectangular. This is suitable for any room and any decor. Otherwise, the circular rug is also sought after. It will bring a touch of softness due to its curves. In any case, you can always hide part of the rug under a piece of furniture, such as a bed, so that only a portion is visible. For example, a half-circle at the foot of a bed is totally charming.

There are also rugs with atypical shapes, such as those in the shape of a puddle of paint. Their edges are wavy and irregular. These models are rarer, but they can easily energize a decor. If you lack a focal point in the room, choose this one: it will be an eye-catcher! This type of rug will look great in the living room or in the guest room.

Quality

The quality of the rug you choose can be an issue. Some models contain little fiber, are thin and easily damaged. You'll slip a large piece of furniture into it and the rug will remain marked. You will also find that the fibers come off easily and this can be annoying when cleaning the house. If the room is not used much, lower quality models can do the job. But avoid these in high traffic areas.

To know if a rug is of good quality, check its thickness and weight. Often, a heavy product will be of better quality. The price is also a good indicator!

Practical advice

Still can't find the right model? Use sheets of paper and a pair of scissors to scale up the room and its furniture. Then, cut different sizes of rugs and insert them into your miniature room. You'll quickly see the ideal size. If you are comfortable with technology, an interior design application will help you even more: it will even be possible to imagine the colors and textures of your future rug!

Otherwise, go to a Deco Surfaces store with a photo of the room, its dimensions and the measurements of the furniture in it: an advisor will direct you to the right model.
