Guide for choosing your kitchen backsplash

The backsplash is one of the most important visual elements of your kitchen and the most practical. That’s why it’s definitely one of the most difficult to choose!  There are tons of options on the market: how do you choose?

It can be difficult to make a choice that suits the style of your kitchen and your needs. Also, some models may be part of ephemeral trends that will steal the show for a few years, while others are timeless classics. So where do you start shopping?

1. Decide on a focal point

It’s best to choose the backsplash at the very end of your kitchen project. Instead, start with the cabinets, countertops and appliances. Next, determine the focal point of the room with all the elements in place in mind:

  • Simple countertops and cabinets are an opportunity to have fun with the backsplash to make it the focal point. For example, a mosaic of colors and textures is possible for people who enjoy maximalist or colorful designs.
  • If the cabinets and/or countertops are highly ornate, opt for a more subtle backsplash instead, so that the more special elements of the room stand out, such as a countertop with elaborate granite patterns or veined marble.

2. Timelessness wins over trends

The glass backsplashes that were seen on every kitchen surface ten years ago are now out of style: better not to install them in your kitchen if you are renovating! Subway tiles have been used for hundreds of years and are a timeless choice. If you’re bored with those white rectangles laid in brick style, consider the different options that will spice up its traditional look:

  • With vertical, one-third offset, basket, herringbone or straight installation;
  • By using a different color and finish, such as an extra glossy gray or matte black;
  • With oversized tiles rather than regular size tiles.

3. Install the backsplash to the ceiling

If your budget allows, mount the countertop installation all the way to the ceiling. This will give a splendid look to your backsplash and generate a height effect that is not to be neglected, especially considering that new condos and houses are getting smaller and smaller!

4. Use the same stone as the countertop

For a clean, modern look, choose the same material as the countertop for your backsplash. Quartz, granite or even marble stone that extends over the countertops and up the wall to the ceiling will give the entire room a refined and distinguished look.

If you opt for this idea, it would be best to have it installed by a professional to avoid non-symmetrical results. Also be aware that this option will be enhanced by very simple cabinets. Ideally, the stone you choose will not have too elaborate a pattern either, as the look created by duplicating the countertop on the backsplash is already quite imposing.

5. Does the backsplash have to match the countertop perfectly?

These two elements of your kitchen must work well together – otherwise, the room will not look harmonious – without being exactly the same. Most of the time, kitchen countertops and backsplashes will not be identical, but rather in contrasting colors and patterns or, on the contrary, will complement each other through the tones used, style and texture. It all depends on the design of the space as a whole!

Finally, the backsplash chosen must be pleasing to the eye, but also functional: easy to clean and resistant to splashes and moisture. Visit a Deco Surfaces store to discover the possible models and have all your questions answered.
